Learning by Interview
Monday night I had an interview with Microsoft, and it looks like I will be heading up there tomorrow for a face to face interview. While I don't like the idea of camping in Redmond, and commuting south to Vancouver on the weekends, I think that the person who would end up being my boss is about the best possible candidate I could dream up. Except maybe for him and the job to be located in Vancouver. I am finding that interviews can be an awesome learning opportunity. Like on that particular interview I learned that there is something called "the open-closed" principle, and "inversion of control", plus I got a reference for an incredible book on design patterns that is accessible to your average Mort.
Looking up "inversion of control" has been brain bleeding at best, the "open-closed" principle yielded worse results, but the bottom line is, "In an interview, you have the opportunity to discover holes in your base knowledge, and holes in your assumptions, thereby giving you the opportunity to fix, fill, or cover those holes."
I've got two opportunities in Portland that I have done face to face interviews with, now I just need to hear back from them. Much as I want the Microsoft job (covet is closer to the word), I would MUCH rather have a good development job in the Portland metro area. | | Monday, May 9th, 2005 | | 1:04 pm |
Just got cruise control working.
This has been SO much a labor of love. CruiseControl.net is this great tool that is a little daunting for a beginner, or at least it is for a Mort. Here's a couple of things that made it possible. http://joefield.mysite4now.com/blog/articles/146.aspx is an incredible walk through. plus, I started out with tree surgeon, an incredible tool that scott hanselman recommended at the last padnug meeting. | | Tuesday, January 4th, 2005 | | 1:29 pm |
Useful link - The ADO Guy
I just found "The ADO Guy". Apparently this is Shawn Wildermuth's site, but I only found that info in the small print at the bottom of the page. http://www.adoguy.com/Anyway, it looks useful, and it got me started on getting my own tech blog. |
